Medication side effects that look like aging

Topic: Medications & Doctor Visits Reading time: 4 min

Some symptoms we blame on “getting older” are actually medication side effects or interactions. This doesn’t mean you should stop meds—it means a review might help you feel better and safer.

Common “looks like aging” side effects

  • Dizziness or lightheadedness
  • Fatigue or grogginess
  • Constipation
  • Memory or concentration problems
  • Balance problems and falls
  • Dry mouth (can affect dental health)
Timing clue: If symptoms started after a new medication or dose change, put that in bold on your visit notes.

What makes side effects more likely

  • Multiple medications (especially from different prescribers)
  • Over-the-counter sleep aids, allergy meds, or pain meds
  • Supplements (some interact with prescription meds)
  • Dehydration or kidney changes

How to ask for a medication review

  • “Can we review my meds for side effects and interactions?”
  • “Which meds are most likely causing dizziness/constipation/fatigue?”
  • “Is there a lower dose or alternative?”
  • “Can we simplify timing so it’s easier to follow?”

Use our Medication List Builder and read Medication review: avoiding side effects and interactions.

Ask your clinician (starter questions)
  • “What’s the most likely explanation in my case?”
  • “What serious causes are we ruling out?”
  • “Could any medications or supplements contribute?”
  • “What’s the simplest next step?”
  • “What should make me call you sooner or seek urgent care?”
