Medication review: avoiding side effects and interactions
Topic: Medications & Doctor Visits
Reading time: 2 min
As medication lists grow, side effects and interactions become more likely—especially when you add over-the-counter meds and supplements. A review is one of the highest-value things you can do.
Common “medication-shaped” symptoms
- Dizziness or unsteadiness
- Daytime sleepiness or brain fog
- Constipation
- Dry mouth, blurry vision
- New confusion or memory trouble
Do a “brown bag review”
Bring all medications and supplements (or clear photos of labels) to your appointment.
Questions to ask
- “Do I still need each of these?”
- “Are any doses higher than needed?”
- “Are there safer alternatives for older adults?”
- “Which meds might increase fall risk?”
- “Could any of these affect sleep or memory?”
Never stop a prescription suddenly without medical guidance. Some medications require tapering.
Keep an updated list
Include medication name, dose, time of day, and what it’s for. Keep a copy in your wallet and on your phone.

Ask your clinician (starter questions)
- “What’s the most likely explanation in my case?”
- “What serious causes are we ruling out?”
- “Could any medications or supplements contribute?”
- “What’s the simplest next step?”
- “What should make me call you sooner or seek urgent care?”
