Fall-proof your home in an afternoon (room-by-room)

Topic: Home Safety & Falls Reading time: 2 min

Most fall prevention is boring—and that’s a compliment. Better lighting, fewer trip hazards, and a couple smart upgrades can make a huge difference.

Start with the “big three”

  • Lighting: brighter bulbs, night lights, clear pathways.
  • Floors: remove loose rugs or add non-slip backing.
  • Clutter: clear cords and “stuff” from walkways.

Room-by-room highlights

  • Bathroom: non-slip mat, grab bars, raised toilet seat if needed.
  • Stairs: sturdy handrails on both sides if possible, good lighting, high-contrast edge strips.
  • Bedroom: lamp within reach, clear path to bathroom, avoid slippery socks.
  • Kitchen: keep frequently used items at waist height (less climbing/overreaching).
Quick win: If you only do one thing, improve lighting from bedroom → bathroom.

Ask your clinician about fall risk if…

  • You’ve fallen in the past year
  • You feel unsteady or dizzy
  • You’re afraid of falling (it changes how you move)
