Fall-proof your home in an afternoon (room-by-room)
Topic: Home Safety & Falls
Reading time: 2 min
Most fall prevention is boring—and that’s a compliment. Better lighting, fewer trip hazards, and a couple smart upgrades can make a huge difference.
Start with the “big three”
- Lighting: brighter bulbs, night lights, clear pathways.
- Floors: remove loose rugs or add non-slip backing.
- Clutter: clear cords and “stuff” from walkways.
Room-by-room highlights
- Bathroom: non-slip mat, grab bars, raised toilet seat if needed.
- Stairs: sturdy handrails on both sides if possible, good lighting, high-contrast edge strips.
- Bedroom: lamp within reach, clear path to bathroom, avoid slippery socks.
- Kitchen: keep frequently used items at waist height (less climbing/overreaching).
Quick win: If you only do one thing, improve lighting from bedroom → bathroom.
Ask your clinician about fall risk if…
- You’ve fallen in the past year
- You feel unsteady or dizzy
- You’re afraid of falling (it changes how you move)
